Meet Cindy
Early Years
Cindy Riegel was born and raised in upstate New York surrounded by a close knit community of family and friends. Her grandfather, father, and uncle ran a railroad construction business, while her mom took care of Cindy and her two brothers. All three children attended the public schools of Bethlehem Central School District. In high school, Cindy worked in a local bakery and had a pet sitting business to earn money for college.
Cindy received a scholarship to attend St. Lawrence University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1992. During college, Cindy worked as an athletic trainer and campus EMT and spent a semester abroad in Kenya.
Teton Valley
One week after graduation, Cindy moved into a tent near Lander, Wyoming and was responsible for feeding and observing six young peregrine falcons that were being introduced to the wild. This was followed by two years of teaching field education for Teton Science Schools in Kelly, WY.
During the summer of 1995, Cindy worked as a research assistant for the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and explored much of Teton Valley in search of nesting birds of prey. She feel in love with the valley and knew it was the place she wanted to call home.
After working and traveling in Asia and earning a Master of Science degree from the University of Vermont, Cindy returned to Teton Valley in 1999 and accepted a job as an ecologist with an environmental consulting firm in Jackson. Over the course of five years, she worked on a diversity of projects for state and federal agencies, private developers, and conservation organizations.
Government & Community
Cindy first got involved with local government and community development when she volunteered on the Economic Development Subcommittee for the 2004 Teton County Comprehensive Plan. She also served on the Teton County Planning and Zoning Commission from 2008 to 2010. She was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in November 2014 and took office in January 2015.
A strong passion for innovative education inspired Cindy to join the Teton Valley Community School Board of Directors in 2005. Her eight years of service was multifaceted and included roles as Board President (overseeing finance and fundraising) and Executive Director (managing staff and daily operations).
Cindy currently holds the position of Chair of the Board of County Commissioners and is a member of the 7th Judicial District Magistrate Commission. She also serves on the Board of Directors for High Country RC&D and is a member of the Public Lands Steering Committee for the Idaho Association of Counties (IAC) and the National Association of Counties (NACo). She is a founding member of the Teton Food and Farm Coalition and currently serves on the board of the non-profit Yoga Source in Driggs, Idaho.
Cindy enjoys exploring the far reaches of Teton Valley with her three children (ages 20, 17 and 13) and contributing to the positive growth and prosperity of her community.
